I'm a huge believer in purpose, but with everything that is going on in the world, does purpose really matter?
It's a fair question. Taking time to find and connect to our life purpose could be construed as self-indulgent, or perhaps even selfish, given the number and nature of challenges in our world. So why might it be important?
On a personal level, purpose is powerful. Studies have shown that people with a purpose are known to be happier, healthier and live longer. Knowing our purpose brings both relaxation and energy, excitement and motivation. Imagine waking up every morning knowing why you are here, and excited to do it.
Purpose plays a key part in conscious decision making - something of vital importance in a world that is constantly competing for our attention. It makes it clear what to say yes to and what to say no to. Clarity of purpose brings helps all sorts of personal and professional decisions. When we know all 4 elements of our true purpose (not just our mission), we can choose to focus our efforts and expand our impact in the world where we are most needed and with more ease and joy because we are harnessing our unique essence, talents, expertise and experience.
Knowing why we are here and what we are made for, we can make wise choices about when and how to align with others and/or know when it is time to more intentionally carve our own path and advance our own work (and legacy) in the world.
Purpose is also important at an organisational and system level for similar reasons, though I'll save those reasons for a future post.
