I have been struck recently by the number of people I know who have perpetual background noise playing. Typically it is the tv or music. It used to be music for me, as I rarely owned a tv. I do watch things from time to time on my laptop. I listen to the radio and audiobooks a fair amount, and occasionally I listen to music. But putting things on in the background has fallen way for me. I don't know when exactly, as I have only recently realised it as visiting friends have been surprised at my lack of a sound system. Mostly these days my soundscape is silence with the periodic punctuation of day to day life. Most often, because of where I live, it is simply the sound of nature going about its day.
