Willingness to pay and how it varies

Why is it that we are willing to pay for somethings but not others? Two examples: physical goods as opposed to some (not all) services, and leadership development but not spiritual development.

What determines our individual and collective willingness to pay, our sense of inherent or potential value, our expectations about what should be free and what shouldn’t, …?

No judgment. Just genuinely curious as it’s different for me and for some of those I know. It’s also varied somewhat over the course of my life. Has it for you? If so, why?
